Meet some of our patients
Holly, age 3
Holly was given just three months to live after she was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. This is a condition where the heart enlarges to three times its normal size. Holly’s only hope was a heart transplant and after a desperate appeal launched by her parents last summer, a suitable donor was found.
At just six months old Holly underwent a five hour transplant operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The operation went well and she celebrated her first birthday; a milestone her parents had feared she would never reach. Holly’s mum Karen is grateful to the family of Holly’s heart donor and the team at Great Ormond Street Hospital and says: “We felt in really safe hands with the doctors, nurses and play specialists whose support helped us through a really scary time.”
The Royal Hospital for Children in Bristol now cares for Holly and she also comes to London for regular check ups with Great Ormond Street Hospital specialists. Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest centre for children with heart problems in the UK and last year 25 of a total 29 cardiothoracic transplants on children were performed at the London hospital.
