Meet some of our patients

Lucy, age 13

Lucy

At five years old, Lucy suffered a series of minor illnesses until random bruising alerted doctors to a more serious problem. In March 2000 she was diagnosed with MDS, Myelodysplastic anaemia at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

The only cure available was a bone marrow transplant, which Lucy received a year later, thanks to a donor from the Anthony Nolan Trust.  She spent five months in isolation, experiencing severe side effects from chemotherapy.

Despite a difficult time in hospital, Lucy has some happy memories, especially a special visit from the pop band SClub 7, who came to see her after she wrote them a letter. Treatment had caused the soft tissue of her mouth to dissolve, but the excitement of meeting her favorite pop band prompted her to speak for the first time in five weeks.

Now 13, Lucy has regular check ups at GOSH. Last year, a secondary malignancy requiring surgery was discovered on her thyroid - a rare problem in such a young patient.  Despite this, she is back in the same year at school and doing well. Lucy is a keen fundraiser and last summer stole the show at a GOSH fundraiser, the Robinson Valentine Fashion Show, when she made a speech about her treatment and took a turn on the catwalk.
