Simeon, age 5

When he was two years old Simeon’s mother June took her son to the doctor because he had been swaying and falling over. After repeated visits, a test pointed to problems with his reflexes and Simeon was taken to North Middlesex Hospital for a scan.

Simeon was found to have a brain tumour and five days later he arrived at Great Ormond Street Hospital for an operation to remove it. The surgery was successful, but unfortunately Simeon caught an infection two days later. He subsequently spent eleven days in intensive care in Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Parrot ward.

12 days after the operation, Simeon was placed in a support system, where he showed the first signs of alertness. He was taken out of intensive care. Simon was unable to walk, swallow, speak or see clearly after the operation but after three scans he was given the all clear.

Simeon was fitted with hearing aids in both ear and occasionally uses a special needs buggy for walking. He is also undergoing speech therapy. Simeon started school on 3 Oct 2006, where it is reported that he is doing well.
