The first legacy and the start of a life-giving tradition

In 1855, just two years after its foundation, the hospital received a legacy from Miss Thompson of Brighton.  Her legacy of £400, less taxes, was literally a life-saver for the struggling hospital and the children it has helped over the generations.

The result has been that from the earliest days legacies have been recognised and appreciated as a vital source of income.

The impact of that first gift so encouraged the founders that the 1856 annual report carried a full page advertising feature suggesting wording for future bequests.

Life saving legacies are as vital to the work of the hospital today as they were then.
