The money raised with the help of Bernie Ecclestone and the Formula 1® community has played a significant part in the building of the hospital’s new Heart and Lung Centre as well as the redevelopment of the Surgery Centre and we are hugely grateful for their continued support.
For the last nine years and with the kind permission of Bernie Ecclestone, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity has been privileged to host the only official launch partyfor the FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX.
This glamorous and much anticipated event, supported by the F1®
community, and attended by a host of celebrity guests, racing fans and charity supporters has raised an impressive £3 million for Great Ormond Street Hospital since its first year in 2005.
Over the years our guests have mingled with celebrities such as Lewis Hamilton, Tess Daly and Vernon Kay, HRH Princess Beatrice of York, David Coulthard, Damian Lewis, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Thandie Newton, and Christian Horner - all while sipping cocktails in the spectacular surroundings of venues such as Battersea Evolution and the Natural History Museum. We have also been lucky enough to enjoy live entertainment from the likes of Sugababes, N*E*R*D, Duffy and DJ Annie Mac. Each year, one of the highlights of the evening is a thrilling live auction, where guests have the opportunity to bid on amazing prizes such as exclusive VIP paddock passes to the Monaco Grand Prix, a private box to see Adele at the Royal Albert Hall and a luxury two-week holiday to Necker Island, Sir Richard Branson’s private island in the British Virgin Islands.
Trackside at Silverstone
Each year, thanks to the generosity of Formula One Management, some of our patients and their families are invited to Silverstone and given exclusive access to the team garages and paddock area over the British Grand Prix weekend. Here they are able to see the exciting world of F1®
at close quarters and even meet some of the heroes of the sport.
In addition, charity volunteers kindly give up their time to walk the length and breadth of Silverstone collecting donations from race enthusiasts attending the weekend.
Motorsport in medicine
As well as making a significant contribution to the charity’s fundraising, F1®
has also lent a helping hand to Great Ormond Street Hospital in an altogether unexpected way.
One of the most perilous times during the care of a seriously ill child is the handover between surgery and intensive care - as each moment passes during the transfer, the risk to the patient increases. It’s an ongoing issue but one that doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital were determined to improve.
Senior technicians from Vodafone, McLaren, Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari F1®
teams visited the hospital to observe and evaluate surgery teams in action, while two hospital consultants travelled to Ferrari’s Italian base in Maranello to observe the perfect choreography of pit stops at first hand.
The project had a very real impact with several new processes and mechanisms implemented in the operating theatres. It has also received a great deal of attention from within the UK medical community and beyond, with hospitals from around the world eager to discover more about Great Ormond Street Hospital’s new F1®
