Itinerary

Friday

We’ll meet at the campsite just outside Haltwhistle in the late afternoon for dinner and an evening briefing. After a good meal we quickly get to know the rest of the group.

Transport can be arranged from Haltwhistle railway station if required.

Saturday

After a good breakfast we will travel by coach to Lanercost Priory and the start of our hike.

Our first 7km offers a great chance to warm up as we hike along a small road passing through several villages, and then up and along a ridge running alongside the wall.

We arrive at the impressive Birdoswald Roman Fort, set on a high point above the small village of Gilsland. From there our path runs alongside Hadrian’s Wall, leading us into Northumberland National Park.

From our lunch-stop at the Roman Army Museum we walk along the most visible sections of the wall, which run along spectacular cliff tops and through stunning countryside. We continue on back to our campsite for a well-deserved feast.

Trek approx 24km / 15 miles

Sunday

After breakfast we set out towards the wall again on foot. Climbing back up to the ridge we meet the wall and continue walking east.

To the north we have great views towards Wark Forest and the barren landscapes of North Northumberland. Our path takes us along crags and past several lakes to Housestead Roman Fort, a fitting end to our challenge.

After a group photograph, we return to our campsite by coach to pack and set off home after a very rewarding weekend!

Approx 10km / 6 miles
