New findings, new treatments, new hope
Tragically, cancer kills more children each year than any other illness in the United Kingdom.
However, medical science is making remarkable advances in understanding and treating these devastating illnesses and Great Ormond Street Hospital is at the forefront of this effort.
Today, having absorbed a recent 61% increase in new patient referrals, the hospital has become the largest paediatric cancer centre in Europe and the third largest in the western world.
In order to care for these new patients, the hospital had to increase the physical capacity of its cancer services. Thanks to the generous philanthropic support of the Reuben Foundation we were able to open a new daycare ward, Safari Daycare, in April 2008. The picture above is taken from a piece of artwork in the new ward.
Working hand-in-hand with the UCL Institute of Child Health, a leader in paediatric research, Great Ormond Street Hospital continues to develop groundbreaking techniques with progress in basic science being translated into new clinical practice for the benefit of children worldwide.
Our fundraising campaign is aimed at helping Great Ormond Street Hospital to continue this progress and to take the lead in pioneering new research, developing more advanced and less toxic treatments for all childhood cancers and ultimately seeking cures to eradicate the trauma and suffering caused by these diseases.
