Art for health's sake - Lee Elliot Major
"Shall we look for a new cure for cancer, shall we build a flat for a family whose child is on intensive care, or shall we get a musician in once a week for a year?"
If you had asked me before resesarching and writing this article, the honest answer is that without the slightest hesitation I would have given my votes to research grants and hospital buildings.
I suspect most people would share similar views. Art is seen as a nice add-on, a luxury - particularly when it comes to saving and improving the lives of young children.
But in the last week my views have been completely transformed. Yes, of course one of the world's leading hospitals needs to raise vast amounts of funding for cutting-edge research and modern clinical and patient facilities. But art holds an important place too.
