Sheila Thorpe

Sheila Thorpe has volunteered for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity for 20 years and is still very active in our office in Bernard Street, London.

"I was walking down Great Ormond Street one day and spotted a teddy in a shop that I thought would be great for my nephew. The shop was so busy with customers that I offered to help out and the rest is history. I have been actively volunteering for 20 years now and enjoy coming into the office once a week to help out the Community Fundraising Team. I really enjoy the big events like the London Marathon and our Friends Day at Paradise Wildlife Park

Sheila volunteers one day a week and helps the teams with fundraising packs, mailings and even the odd cheque presentation!

Steve Smith

Essex volunteer Steve Smith has been actively involved with the charity for several years now. Son and hospital patient, Jack often accompanies Steve to events and has always been a great ambassador for the Charity.

"Jack and I attend cheque presentations, collect mobile phones and stamps and do our own adrenalin based activities, wash cars and generally help raise the profile of the hospital with radio interviews, press releases to name a few. We are always happy to help out in any way we can.

Jack was born with a Tracheo Oesophageal Fistula & Oesophageal Atresia (TOF/OA for short!).  Simply, Jack’s food pipe was not connected to his stomach and his windpipe had a hole in.

22 operations later Jack is still smiling and goes from strength to strength but  without the fundraising efforts the research, family accommodation and general running of the hospital would not be possible."

Please note that unfortunately Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity is unable to offer volunteering opportunities within the hospital itself. If you are interested in volunteering within the hospital please call 020 7405 9200 and ask for volunteer services or visit the hospital's website. Thank you.
