Ryan Cassar Appeal
Ryan
Cassar was hit by a car on his way to school on 18 January 2006, with
his twin brother Luke by his side. Nine days later, he died at GOSH from
his head injuries, aged 12.
During his time in the hospital's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Ryan was monitored by regular brain scans (CAT scans), which involved unplugging Ryan from one set of machines and re-plugging him into mobile machines for the journey to the scanner room, a process which would take up to 1 hour 40 minutes to complete.
Ryan’s family are now doing all they can to raise money to help the hospital buy a mobile CAT scanner for PICU in memory of Ryan, in the hope that it may help other children who suffer head trauma. A mobile scanner* can scan a sick child at their bedside, resulting in less risk and trauma for the patient.
Donations have come from Ryan's school, as well as family and friends, and almost £8,000 was raised by doing a sponsored walk from their home in Essex to the hospital. In September 2006, they collected money at Lakeside shopping centre and held a Ball; they have planned even more fundraising events over the next year.
The Cassar family's dedicated fundraising efforts over the year have so far raised £32,410, but they still need help to reach their target. Contact GOSHCC's general fundraising team if you'd like to help.
* This equipment is currently being sourced and tested in the USA. If it transpires that the scanner is not suitable for use at GOSH, the funds raised will purchase alternative essential medical equipment for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
