Nautical Nurses’ triumphant return

Arriving homeAfter two and a half months and over 2,550 miles, the Nautical Nurses have successfully completed the 2007 Atlantic Rowing Race.

They've been battered by flying fish, rough weather and nearly been mowed down by yachts, liners and fishing boats.

CelebratingWard Sister Herdip Sidhu and Elin Haf Davies have successfully completed the challenge of a lifetime to row across the Atlantic. It was not smooth sailing as the pair took on freak waves, severe sea sickness and chocolate shortages to raise vital funds for the hospital’s research into metabolic conditions.

Herdip and Elin are overjoyed to see the successful conclusion of two years of gruelling physical, psychological training and boat building to prepare for this epic journey.

Elin said: “This has been an incredible commitment and there were times when we felt really overwhelmed; but we were always determined to finish this race and raise funds to help our patients”

Despite having never rowed before the nurses have rowed over 2,552 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the West Indies; the equivalent of crossing the English Channel 128 times.

There over 1,300 serious metabolic conditions, some of them life-threatening, affecting thousands of children in the UK, this challenge will provide vital funding for two research projects; which will offer these children a lifeline.

The nurses would like to thank everyone who supported them throughout their journey, especially their key sponsor Mapeley.
