Sarah Cox was born a normal healthy baby, but at six days old she contracted viral meningitis which caused severe damage to her heart.
Critically ill, Sarah was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital for urgent specialist care.
After two weeks on the hospital's cardiac Intensive Care Unit, doctors prepared Sarah's parents for the worst. Her only hope was for a donor heart to be found so she could receive a transplant. With a national shortage of donor organs, the chances of finding a donor heart for Sarah were slim.
However, a suitable donor heart was found and aged just 23 days, Sarah received a life-saving heart transplant.
Now a lively and bubbly two year old, Sarah is doing really well. Her family are now raising awareness of the need for more people to sign up to be organ donors, so more children, like Sarah, have the chance to live.
