Heart and lung diseases kill more children and adults in this country than any other disease.
At Great Ormond Street Hospital alone, around 10,000 children with complex heart and lung conditions are treated each year.
Heart disease
- Heart disease may be inherited or acquired
- In the UK, one in every 145 babies is born with congenital heart disease
- A quarter of these will not survive
- Half of these will need complex treatment or surgery
Lung disease
- Lung disease affects one person in seven
- The majority of respiratory illnesses in adults originate early in childhood with around 1.4 million children currently receiving treatment for asthma
- A quarter of all admissions to children’s wards in the UK is because of a respiratory disease
