Despite being a centre of excellence, our requirements and potential now exceed our cramped and outdated facilities.
In the 20 years that I have been privileged enough to work at Great Ormond Street Hospital, I have seen huge technological advances in medicine and surgery. The demand for our services has grown dramatically and with much larger specialist equipment, it is not surprising that we are running out of space!
Creating the right environment
Modern medicine requires more than just a bed. We want to treat our patients in the facilities they deserve and their families expect.
As a parent, I would want to be beside my sick child in a comfortable, soothing and quiet environment. I would want space, mentally and physically, to reflect and to support my child. The stress of a child's illness is enough to bear, and the family and siblings deserve more than we can currently give them.
Better facilities for research
Our research work has made big strides forward over recent years and our patients are seeing the benefits. Better facilities will enable us to develop new treatments even faster.
Supporting our staff
Our staff also deserve to work in better, less cramped conditions. It is they who put the ‘Great’ into Great Ormond Street Hospital. It will not stay ‘Great’ unless our facilities match the talent available.
Put simply, with your support we will be able to build a new Heart and Lung Centre that will help us develop more groundbreaking techniques, treat more children and save more lives.
