Cameron

Four-year old Cameron owes his life to a new therapy pioneered by Consultant Cardiologist, Professor John Deanfield at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

At six months old, weighing just over 6lbs, Cameron's heart and lung condition, pulmonary hypertension, had reached a critical stage. After more than 200 episodes of cardiac arrest, his parents were again faced with the decision of whether to revive him on the next episode. Professor Deanfield proposed a radically new approach - to prescribe Cameron with Viagra, a drug traditionally used to treat impotence.

Professor Deanfield's research into Viagra had shown that it could help conditions like pulmonary hypertension by dilating the blood vessels and allowing oxygen levels to increase.

Just four days after being prescribed the drug, Cameron had made a good recovery and was able to go home. Four years later, Cameron is a healthy little boy with a much brighter future.

His mother, Nicola, expressed her joy at Cameron's treatment, describing his recovery as 'miraculous'.
