Stars from Disney’s 'The Lion King' visit Great Ormond Street hospital

On 21 October 2010, stars from Disney’s award-winning musical The Lion King performed for patients and families at the hospital.

The unique performance was the culmination of a week of activities and entertainment brought to the hospital by The Walt Disney Company as part of their ongoing partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The performances

Principal actors from the West End production including Andile Gumbi ('Simba'), Narran McLean ('Nala'), Brown Lindwe Mkhize ('Rafiki'), Shaun Escoffery ('Mufasa'), George Asprey ('Scar'), Nick Mercer ('Timon') and Keith Bookman ('Pumbaa'), performed in full costume for groups of excited patients, families and staff at the hospital.

To make sure that no one was left out several actors then visited patients in isolation wards, starting with the lions on the Lion ward.

The Lion King themed activities

Throughout the week, screenings of all The Lion King animated feature films were shown across the hospital network, along with an educational film to give patients a ‘virtual backstage tour’ of Disney’s acclaimed musical.

The Lion King themed activity sheets and canvas decorating provided further entertainment for patients.

The Disney Appeal

The cast from the stage show will be holding bucket collections after performances during the week commencing 26 October 2010, further demonstrating Disney Theatrical’s commitment to support the Disney Appeal for the charity.

As part of our partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, Disney is always looking at ways in which we can bring some magic to the patients and their families.
Disney is able to touch children’s lives directly, and we hope that by giving these children an opportunity to enjoy The Lion King and to interact with their favourite characters we can brighten their lives at a difficult time.
Disney is very proud of its partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and will continue our fundraising for the hospital’s redevelopment appeal.
