Never Far Away: Essex Appeal

Seriously ill children want to be metres from mum and dad, not miles. Never far away.

Keeping families together during difficult times is vital

Our new Never Far Away: Essex Appeal aims to raise £300,000 to cover the running costs of three of our key parent and family accommodation facilities at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for a year.

Just £245 covers the cost of a week of accommodation, meaning families from Essex and across the UK are never far away while their child is in hospital.

A seven-night stay for two adults in a budget hotel, 15 minutes from GOSH, would cost a staggering £815. This is simply not affordable for most families.

We are asking the people of Essex to get behind this appeal. Keeping families close to their ill child whilst they receive treatment at the hospital.

Meet Nicola and Hugo from Manningtree, Essex

Nicola and her husband stayed in our parent accommodation while their son Hugo (pictured below) was being treated at GOSH. Nicola says: "The family accommodation opposite the hospital was a lifeline for our family at a very distressing and upsetting time. Being close to Hugo and the hospital took away some of the stress and pressure. As parents, we wanted to be close to Hugo at all times while he was in the hospital and a long stay in a hotel wouldn't have been feasible for us.

I am very excited to support the Never Far Away Appeal and help other families who may need to use the accommodation in the future."

Helping families be together at tough times

More than 50% of the children and young people treated at GOSH come from outside London. Because the care they receive is so specialist, some need to stay for several months. Having a child in hospital is stressful enough on its own without the added pressure of paying for hotels or expensive train fares. So we want to make sure that parents and carers have access to nearby accommodation free of charge.

Support is never far away

At Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) we help to fund services that can ease the burden on families, raise spirits, and support children and young people through their treatment. We fund accommodation for families from Essex and across the UK. But we can’t do it without your support.

Weston House is just minutes from the hospital and provides a ‘home away from home’ for our patients and their families. It gives them a place to eat together and regain some normality. Each bedroom has a phone that connects directly to the hospital, so parents and carers can easily reach the hospital when they need support.

We need to raise £300,000 to offer this service to the families who need our help.
