What is the Walkie Talkie Tower Climb?

Walkie Talkie Tower Climb is a stair climb event being held on Saturday 2nd March at 20 Fenchurch Street (or more commonly known as the Walkie Talkie building!). Participants will get exclusive access to the Sky Garden when they complete the climb. Money raised from the event goes to support the 619 children who arrive at Great Ormond Street Hospital every day.

Can we enter as a team?

Teams cannot be entered through the registration platform, but it doesn’t mean you can’t still take part with your friends and family! If you would like to take part as a group, we suggest you joining the same wave time. If you would like to do this, we suggest that you book closely together as we cannot reserve places on a wave time and there are a limited number of spaces in a wave. Remember, you can fundraise as a team through JustGiving too!

How many steps are there?

There are 36 floors to take you up to the Sky Garden which equals an impressive 828 steps!

How much does it cost?

Registration is £25. We ask every climber to commit to raising £250 for Great Ormond Street Hospital as well.

Is my registration fee refundable?

All registration fees are non-refundable.

What is included in the registration fee?

Your registration fee includes a free t-shirt, finisher’s medal and a celebratory drink in the Sky Garden.

Who can take part?

Due to the nature of the event, only people over 16 years old can take part. You can run, jog or walk your way to the Sky Garden - whatever you feel most comfortable doing!

What is the wheelchair and pushchair access?

Due to the nature of the event, it is not suitable for wheelchair users. However, wheelchair users are welcome to celebrate with participants in the Sky garden, as well as anyone with pushchairs.

Can my friends and family meet me in the Sky Garden?

Yes of course! They are more than welcome to wait in the Sky Garden to see you across the finishing line. We will require names of all guests attending on the day (you will be asked for this information prior to the event) and we ask that you limit the number of guests to three per participant as there is a capacity to the Sky Garden. All guests will need to be checked in with a member of GOSH staff and they will be given a wristband to wear for the duration of their visit.

What time does it start?

The first wave starts at 8.30am, with the following waves released every 30 minutes and the last at 11.30am. We ask that all participants arrive at least 30 minutes before their wave so that they can get ready and join in the warm up. The time you selected during registration is your arrival time.

Are there timing chips for the event?

Yes, every participant will be sent a timing chip in their race pack. A leader board will display finishing times once you finish in the Sky Garden.

When do I get my race pack?

Your race pack will be sent to you in the post and you will receive it approximately 2-3 weeks ahead of the event (depending on when you sign up). Your race pack includes your t-shirt, race number, timing chip, free drink wristband and further information about the event.

Are there changing facilities?

There are no changing facilities on site so please come ready to climb!

Is there bag storage?

Yes, there is bag storage available on the ground floor, but we recommend you do not leave any valuables. Bags are left at the owner’s risk. All bags will be searched, in accordance with the Sky Garden security regulations. Remember, to take your camera or phone with you if you want to take some epic pictures of the views from the Sky Garden!

Will there be refreshments?

Yes, as well as the celebratory drink at the finish, water will be available on the climb and the Sky Garden will be offering some cakes, snacks and other drinks for an additional cost.

Will there be first aid?

Yes, there will be first aiders including paramedics as well as security staff and water will also be provided on the day. We also ask all climbers to provide emergency contact details in case of an emergency on the back of their running number.

Do I have to fundraise?

All climbers will need to commit to fundraise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship, which goes towards all the amazing, life-saving work Great Ormond Street Hospital does. Your registration fee goes towards the cost of putting on the event.

Am I allowed to take water with me?

No drinks are allowed to be taken up the stairs during the climb. This is due to health and safety as any spills could cause people to slip on the stairs. However, water will be available at the beginning and of course you can enjoy your free celebratory drink at the Sky Garden! You are also welcome to bring your own drink but this must be left with your bags on the ground floor.

What’s the temperature inside the Sky Garden?

The Sky Pod Bar and viewing terraces are naturally ventilated. This means the temperature in the Sky Pod Bar and on the viewing terraces is similar to the temperature outside, so we suggest friends and family come dressed suitably for the outdoor weather at the time. If you have friends and family coming along, they can bring a warm top for you to put on once you have finished your climb.

What can friends and family bring to the Sky Garden?

Whilst participant belongings will be left in the bag storage on the ground floor, friends and family can bring their own belongings up to the Sky Garden. Friends and family must adhere to the regulations of the Sky Garden:

Admission to the Sky Garden is conditional on security screening of all personal belongings. Any prohibited article, firearm, pyrotechnic, including but not exclusively fireworks and smoke bombs, glass bottles exceeding 33cl, flammable liquids, alcohol or items perceived to be capable of causing harm or being in themselves dangerous are not permitted.

Please note that there are restrictions on the amount of liquids (including gels, lotions etc.) you are permitted to take into the Sky Garden, unless they are essential for medical purposes, special dietary requirements or contain baby food or baby milk. Containers must fit comfortably inside your bag so that it can be sealed.
