Thank you for increasing your regular gift

GOSH patient Stanley

Your generosity helps to cover the running costs of our new accommodation and means that more families can be close to their children whilst they are treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). We would like to give you an update on the accommodation and show how important your gift is to the children and families at GOSH.

Remember Stanley?

Stanley went through life-changing surgery when he had a tracheostomy at GOSH and his mother, Claire, has been in touch to let us know how he is doing now. Claire revealed that just three weeks after his operation, Stanley bravely returned to school and educated his peers and teachers on his experience at GOSH. This is testament to both Stanley’s strength of character and to the success of his surgery and care at GOSH.

Claire described how this was a “huge milestone” for Stanley and improved his confidence. She also had a special message for everyone who so kindly increased their regular gift to support this campaign:

“I think any parent would tell you that to have the worry taken out of not having to think about where you are going to stay …and being near your child is just such a weight lifted off your shoulders… knowing that your family are just a few minutes’ walk away from the hospital can make a huge difference in the healing process I think.”

Accommodation

The accommodation is just a short walk from GOSH and has been occupied since day one of opening. The communal kitchens and comfortable rooms give families a home away from home, whilst the direct phone lines to the ward allow parents to check on their child at night.

Thanks to your generosity, more families can stay together during difficult times and it means so much to them. One family said:

“When we first arrived at GOSH, we had no idea how long we would be at the hospital… We’re at the hospital with our daughter from 7am to 10pm every day, so it’s really helpful to have somewhere to rest. We couldn’t imagine having to stay in a hotel – all our money would be gone by now. The rooms at Sandwich Street are fully furnished and incredibly clean. Georgina and the team do a really good job of making us feel at home… It’s also been really comforting to meet other parents in the common area – people who are going through similar experiences, who know what it’s like to have a child at GOSH.”

Georgina, the housekeeper, added:

“The accommodation here just brings a bit of normal to the lives of parents. A lot of them have been rushed in and don’t have any of their belongings with them. It’s nice for them to be able to have a shower in their own bathroom, make their own breakfast and a cup of tea. Even little things like the hairdryer, the washing machine. Those things are small when you consider that the parents are here because their child is seriously ill.”

The comments left by families in the guest book reflect just how much your gift means:

“We cannot thank everyone involved enough for the support and accommodation given to us here. The home provided is lovely and we are very grateful.”

“Thank you for having us at such a hard time. We really appreciate it.”

“Thank you for your dedication in helping us out through this very difficult time in our lives.”

We hope this shows you the true impact your gift has had in helping to provide accommodation and support for families that need somewhere to stay whilst their sick child is at GOSH.
