Coping with illness and treatments

Experiencing illness, a long-term health or rare condition as a child or young person can sometimes be a challenging and isolating experience. The GOSH Play team encourages children and young people to express their feelings and thoughts through play, which offers them an opportunity to understand what’s happening to them during treatment and recovery.

Play can help children and young people feel positive and empowered during what can be a worrying time.

How play can help

Role play activities can help your child if they’re dealing with medical issues, from serious illness to everyday challenges like needle phobia. Role play can help give them a sense of control in an environment where they might feel a lack of it. Play can offer a calming force and it’s what they know really well.
