New environments and the fear of the unknown

It’s natural for adults and children alike to worry about taking on new challenges in new environments. While adults might have developed coping mechanisms to help them take on a new workplace, find their way in a new geographical area or navigate a new social situation, children often aren’t able to identify the feelings of uncertainty associated with new environments.

How play can help

Play techniques like drawing or building the new environment can help you surface the worries or perceptions your child might have about a certain environment. Role play is a great tool to identify and soothe concerns about new environments. You could use toys to act out how the child might be feeling and introduce other toys as characters that have different points of view.
