Sadness and worry

Sadness and worry illustration

We can’t be happy all the time – everyone has worries now and again! We can support the children and young people in our lives by acknowledging and normalising those feelings and emotions so children don’t get the impression they can’t talk about their feelings of sadness and worry.

How play can help

Asking children to show how they’re feeling, assigning a colour or a shape to it can help them express themselves. Play techniques like creating a physical representation of their feelings can help. For example, ask them to fill a jar with blue beads to show how sad they feel and then what they could do to feel differently. Remove the beads as the worries subside.
