Since partnering with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity) in 2015, Butlin’s has raised more than £1 million to help give seriously ill children the best chance and the best childhood possible. Butlin’s Minehead Sports and Activities Manager, Michael Nield, is one of the passionate team members who made it happen. He shares why he loves being a GOSH Charity champion.

Butlin's and GOSH

"I’ve worked at Butlin’s for 11 years now, but our partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) goes back a lot further than that! It actually dates to 1938, when Butlin’s founder, Sir Billy Butlin, charged Sunday daytime visitors a shilling to enter his resorts, with all proceeds going to the hospital. So, there’s a lot of history there.

"Personally, I have supported as a GOSH Charity champion at the Minehead resort for about eight years, becoming the resort lead two years ago. I always wanted to give something back, but having my own children three years ago really emphasised the need to support. I’d hope that if I was ever in a situation where I had a seriously ill child, people would do the same for me and my family."

An eventful year

"As a charity champion, I organise monthly meetings where our wonderful team members come up with ideas and opportunities to support GOSH Charity. We’ve created a yearly calendar of events and have done anything and everything you can think of. We have posters everywhere, lots of acts signing things to auction off, and we’ve even got a monthly winner for the best staff fundraiser.

"We want to have our biggest and best year yet, and we’re well on track to do it. We’ve got some big events coming up, and our goal is to raise as much as we can. We also want to reach as many people as possible and get even more people on board supporting GOSH Charity."

Team effort

"Butlin’s gives me such freedom in my role to support the charity, both with organising events and holding meetings, and being able to reach out to as many people as possible to support our fundraising.

"All my colleagues want to get involved and regularly pitch ideas to myself and our champions for us to run with and build upon. It has become quite competitive to see who can raise the most money! It's an amazing competition to be a part of, with the outcome only benefiting the children and families at GOSH."

'I'll support for as long as I can’

"I was able to visit GOSH as a charity champion, and it's an experience that will stick with me forever. It’s also such a highlight seeing videos and messages from patients and families.

"With our fundraising, the ultimate goal is to help fund the best care and cures for these children, and to get them home and well as quickly as possible. Through our partnership with GOSH Charity, Butlin's has helped to purchase the hospital's first CT scanner, as well as contributing to groundbreaking research and helping to fund the GOSH Play team.

"Being able to support this amazing charity is an absolute honour. It has changed me as a person and given me a different outlook on mine and my family’s life. I will support GOSH Charity for as long as I physically can. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far."
