Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants celebrates National Charity Week

Whitbread football tournament

Teams from Premier Inn, Beefeater Grill, Brewers Fayre, Table Table and Taybarns raised vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity during their National Charity Week (31 March - 6 April).

The fundraising week saw Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants staff across the UK take part in a range of activities to raise much needed funds towards the hospital's redevelopment. Brave Premier Inn team members in Edinburgh took on a 'Looney Dook' - a dip in the chilly Firth of Forth - while other activities included a bowling night in Belfast and a Lands End to John O'Groats exercise bike challenge in Southampton.

A company-wide football tournament in the run up to National Charity Week, organised by Liverpool and Runcorn Premier Inn Cluster General Manager Nick Smethurst, attracted 100 teams and raised over £6,000 with the team from Taybarns Coventry ultimately reigning victorious.

Team members across the company selected Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity as its charity partner in a staff vote in May 2012, and Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants has pledged to raise £7.5 million towards the Premier Inn Clinical Building, a brand new, state-of-the-art centre due to open in 2017.

The new facilities will form part of the new Mittal Children's Medical Centre, replacing outdated wards in some of the hospital's oldest buildings and providing more privacy and comfort for families, including space for a parent to sleep by their child's bedside. So far, over £2 million has been raised.

Antonia Dalmahoy, Director of Corporate Partnerships at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, said: "It's wonderful that staff at Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants embraced National Charity Week and worked so hard to raise funds. Since our partnership began I have been really moved by the enthusiasm of the company's employees and their desire to get involved and make a real difference to the hospital. I'd like to thank them all for their efforts."
