RBC Trade for the Kids raises an incredible £148,000 for GOSH Charity

Last week saw Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) host its second global RBC Trade for the Kids event, donating over $3.8million to more than 65 youth-focused charities through events across four continents and 23 cities.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) patients Lily (age nine), Felicity (age seven) and her sister Florence (age four months), and Noah (age nine) attended the London event, alongside their families and members of GOSH Children's Charity staff, including CEO Louise Parkes.

Over the course of the day, former patients and staff from other UK leading youth charities also attended the event, including Ronald McDonald House Charities, Teenage Cancer Trust, YoungMinds, The Prince’s Trust and Demelza.

Dave Thomas, CEO, RBC Europe, describes the event as “a global day of celebration that everyone here in London looks forward to”, offering employees and clients the opportunity to “find out first-hand about the invaluable work of our charity partners…”.

The wonderful total was announced at the end of the day, capping off a brilliant day for RBC staff, GOSH patients and the GOSH Charity team.

Sharing stories

As part of RBC Trade for the Kids, Lily, Felicity, Florence and Noah were taken on a tour of the trading floor, sharing their GOSH stories with RBC employees and, in turn, learning about how the bank operates and just what the traders do with so many computer screens.

“We've had a wonderful time today," said Noah's mum, Madeka. "My son has been able to do some trading, speak to some RBC colleagues in Canada and it's really given him some insight into what happens at a bank like this."

Helping to fund parent accommodation

All the money raised through RBC Trade for the Kids is going to help support the provision of parent accommodation for families in the most difficult of times. Felicity and Florence’s mum, Louise, gave a speech to RBC staff on the trading floor about why parent accommodation was so important to her family when Felicity was being treated at GOSH for a serious heart condition. She said how grateful she was that she was able to stay just across the road from the hospital.

Trade for the Kids

RBC are raising £1 million towards the transformation of an existing parent accommodation site at GOSH, expanding its capacity and turning it into a "home away from home" for families. This building will become Royal Bank of Canada House and is due to open in 2020.

RBC Trade for the Kids is one of the highlights of the year in the partnership between GOSH Charity and RBC, which is now in its 10th year. We are celebrating this wonderful milestone by aiming to recruit 10,000 participants for RBC Race for the Kids, the fun run and family festival taking place in Hyde Park on 12 October.
