When is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout the month, we’ll be joining other organisations and individuals around the globe in raising awareness about childhood cancer.

Read about what we’re doing right now to help beat it – and how you can join us.

What is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and why is it so important?

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month takes place globally every September.

It’s an annual event that started in 1990.

While investment in research and treatment has significantly improved survival rates for children with cancer over the last 30 years, cases have gone up, not down.

Every year, around 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide (World Health Organisation), and cancer is the biggest killer of children aged one to 14 in the UK (Cancer Research UK).

Help build the future of children’s cancer care this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) cares for children with the hardest to treat cancers.

New, breakthrough treatments are giving hope to children across the UK, but these advances have outstripped GOSH’s current cancer facilities.

We need a new home for cutting-edge treatments and pioneering research, so we can save more children’s lives.

And because kids with cancer should still get to be kids, we need a place that's more than a hospital – that's a school, a playground, a garden, and so much more.

That’s why we’re building the new Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH.

A beacon of innovation and hope, the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities will provide a space where new discoveries and life-saving breakthroughs can change the future for generations to come.

You can find out more about the centre and what it will include by visiting our Children’s Cancer Centre page.

Help us keep making progress for children with cancer

Construction on the Children's Cancer Centre started in June, and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who's helped us get this far.

But our work is far from over.

We have a team of doctors, nurses, builders, researchers, and many more working to make the Children’s Cancer Centre a reality. Now we just need people like you.

Join us to build the future of children's cancer care at GOSH and help beat cancer for more kids.

Voices from the hospital

There's no better way to raise awareness about childhood cancer than spotlighting the voices of those affected by it the most.

On our Stories page, we speak to some of the families of children and young people treated on the oncology wards at GOSH. They share their unique hospital experiences and hopes for the new Children's Cancer Centre.

Your kind donation will contribute towards funding the new Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH. Our target for this appeal is to raise £300 million. In the event that we cannot use your donation as originally intended, e.g. costs change, additional funds are received over and above our target, the needs of the hospital or patients change, or the project is no longer deliverable, we reserve the right to redirect funds for use against the Hospital’s most urgent needs.
