The Mroué Fateh Centre for Pain Management at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is the first dedicated paediatric pain management centre of its kind in the UK.

It opened in June 2024 thanks to the generous support of Hossein Fateh and Dalia Mroué Fateh, on behalf of the Blue Sands Foundation.

The centre delivers an innovative programme combining evidence-based therapies to help children and young people manage chronic pain and improve their quality of life.

Its intensive, interdisciplinary approach – including daily group, individual and family sessions – has been shown to significantly improve outcomes for children with severe pain-related disability.

GOSH is home to the UK’s largest Paediatric Pain Service, treating children with complex chronic pain who are referred from across the country. The new centre enhances this care by offering a more comprehensive and effective treatment pathway.

‘Finding that perfect line’

After their daughter Sofi developed severe chronic pain, Hossein Fateh and Dalia Mroué struggled to find her specialist care. The family’s trans-Atlantic search inspired them to establish the Mroué Fateh Centre for Pain Management.

"What makes treatment for chronic pain so difficult is that you need to find that perfect line between validating a child’s pain and highlighting the fact that the pain, even though it’s very real, doesn’t control them. It doesn’t dictate your life," Sofi says.

"It’s nearly impossible to get right, walking that line and addressing the emotional burdens with the physical impact. But when you do, that’s what makes for good treatment – and that’s what the centre at GOSH offers."

The Paediatric Pain Management Programme

Chronic pain can affect every aspect of a child’s life, from their physical activities to school attendance and friendships. The three-week intensive programme brings together nursing, physiotherapy, psychology and occupational therapy, delivered through tailored individual and group sessions.

The programme aims to:

  • Improve daily functioning and wellbeing

  • Increase independence despite ongoing pain

  • Equip families with the skills and confidence to support their child

Key features include:

  • Interdisciplinary care: specialists collaborate to deliver coordinated, holistic support.

  • Family involvement: recognising the essential role families play in recovery.

  • Evidence-based practice: grounded in research and continually refined.

“Our experienced team of health care professionals work together to help young people reach their goals, live their lives to the fullest alongside their pain, and help parents support their child. Early results are very promising, and further evidence will help shape the care of young people living with chronic pain into the future.”

Our vision for the future

The Paediatric Pain Management Programme is more than just a treatment option. It’s a step towards a future where children with chronic pain can take back control of their lives and work towards fulfilling their potential. It's about giving these patients the best chance and the best childhood possible.

By integrating this programme into clinical care pathways and supporting it with robust research, we aim to not only improve outcomes for children and young people, but also to provide a model of care that can be replicated nationally and internationally.

Together, we can take the first step towards improving the health and well-being of children and the adults they will become through world-class intervention, education and research.
